1000 years old craftmanship Handwiwing Patola Sarees, Patan, Gujrat, India

Patola sarees of Patan are a prized possession of any saree donning lady. Rich, lustrous, and multi-hued, they are a celebration of the impeccable aesthetics of Indian weaving tradition. Patola weaving goes back to ancient times and finds mention in some texts composed in South India. In fact, Patola patterns can be seen in some murals and sculptures at Ajanta and Ellora caves. But, Patola weaving was first patronized by the Solanki kings of North Gujarat. It is believed that around 700 AD, Solanki king Kumarapal brought around 700 weaver families from Jalna in Maharashtra and settled them in Patan. This is how the distinctive Patan Patola saree tradition began.
The weaving of a Patola saree is not only laborious but also amazingly complex. It takes three or four craftspersons many months to weave one Patola saree. The weaving involves intricate measurements, resist-dyeing technique, and careful alignment of colors in a pattern. The weaves are bright in color and the fabric is reversible. Patola weaves became a staple for the royalty and the wealthy. Their auspicious patterns made them a must-have for brides. Patola sarees cost a packet but they are a beautiful part of our heritage and everyone who owns one is justly proud of it.
